Nasce a Catania, nel gennaio del 1970, dove vive e lavora. Si laurea in Pedagogia nel 1994, frequenta diversi stage e seminari di psicologia e completa il tirocinio come pedagogista al Reparto di Neuropsichiatria Infantile presso la A.U.S.L. di Catania. Lavora come insegnante e tutor nei corsi di formazione.
Nel gennaio del 2013 frequenta il suo primo corso base a Catania. Dopo un lungo viaggio a Cuba il suo lavoro indaga la fotografia sociale e i ritratti. Comincia ad approfondire lo studio della storia della fotografia. Nell’ottobre dello stesso anno partecipa ad un workshop sperimentale intitolato “Paesaggi dell’anima” condotto da Santo Eduardo Di Miceli e Pep Escoda che si concluderà l’anno successivo con una collettiva presso il Centro Arti Visive Sikanie di Catania.
Quasi contestualmente arricchisce la sua esperienza sulla fotografia di reportage frequentando un workshop curato da Roberto Strano. Nel novembre del 2013 è invitata a partecipare ad una collettiva intitolata “Scatti di legalità” promossa dalla Confcommercio e da varie associazioni di volontariato di Catania. Nel giugno del 2014 partecipa ad un corso avanzato di fotografia presso la University of the Arts London. Al suo rientro in Italia collabora alla segreteria organizzativa del Med Photo Fest 2014 di Catania.
Nello stesso anno espone a Ragusa e alla Galleria Luigi Ghirri di Caltagirone. Nel Gennaio 2015 partecipa, come esordiente, alla mostra “Artisti di Sicilia da Pirandello a Iudice” a cura di Vittorio Sgarbi, presso il Castello Ursino di Catania. Tra Ottobre 2015 e Gennaio 2016 partecipa ad un corso avanzato di fotografia di architettura presso Officine Fotografiche Roma, curato da Massimo Siracusa.
A Maggio di quest’anno frequenta una master class di fotografia notturna curata da Massimo Cristaldi. Attualmente continua ad arricchire le sue conoscenze e capacità pratiche attraverso uno studio intensivo della fotografia di architettura.
Lei vede questa fase del suo processo creativo come un naturale progresso del lavoro che ha prodotto fino ad ora. Infatti questo nuovo indirizzo è un ampliamento delle tematiche sociali trattate nei suoi primi lavori; per lei l’uomo e tutto ciò che esso costruisce architettonicamente, mutando arbitrariamente il paesaggio naturale, sono in simbiosi. L’architettura diventa espressione in forma concreta e fruibile dell’evoluzione umana.
Lei dice che “ La fotografia necessita soprattutto di conoscenza storica. In questo processo di apprendimento, ogni fase crea naturalmente un interesse nei confronti di altre tematiche, ed é un continuo aprirsi verso nuovi mondi. Per questo motivo il mio lavoro é caratterizzato da uno studio costante, da una perenne ricerca. Ma, nonostante questo, prestare attenzione ai sussurri della mia voce interiore, che mi indica dove volgere l’obiettivo della macchina fotografica in quel preciso istante, é un elemento essenziale e imprescindibile di ciò che io creo.”

The photographer Emanuela Minaldi (1970) was born in Catania, where she lives and works today. She gained her degree in pedagogy in 1994, attending various courses and seminars in psychology and completing work experience as an educationalist in the Department of Infant Neuropsychiatry in the A.U.S.L, Catania.
She has since worked extensively as teacher and tutor in the field of training. In January, 2013, she attended her first basic course in photography in Catania. After a long journey to Cuba, her work focused upon social and portrait photography. Minaldi began to deepen her knowledge of the history of photography and in October of the same year she participated in an experimental workshop entitled “Landscapes of the Soul” held by Santo Eduardo Di Miceli and Pep Escoda, which concluded the following year with a collective exhibition held in the Centre for Visual Arts Sikanie in Catania.
Almost simultaneously, her experience of reportage photography was further developed when she attended a workshop held by Roberto Strano. In November of 2013, she was invited to participate in a collective exhibition entitled “Scatti di
Catania – Castello Ursino
Legalita’ ” (Shots of Legality) promoted by the Confcommercio and various voluntary associations in Catania. In June 2014, she attended an advanced course in photography at the University of the Arts in London.
On her return to Italy, she collaborated as organizing secretary of the Med Photo Fest 2014 in Catania. In the same year her photographs were exhibited in Ragusa and in the Luigi Ghirri Gallery in Caltagirone. In January 2015, Emanuela participated as newcomer in the exhibition “Artisti di Sicilia da Pirandello a Iudice”, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi at the Castello Ursino in Catania. Between October 2015 and January 2016, she took part in an advanced course in architectural photography at the Officine Fotografiche, Rome held by Massimo Siragusa. In May of this year, she frequented a Master Class in night photography by Massimo Cristaldi.
Minaldi is currently continuing to deepen her knowledge of the field and practical technique through intensive study of architectural photography. She sees this phase of her creativity as a natural progression of the work that she has produced until now. In fact, this direction is an amplification of the social themes of her earlier work. For her, human beings are all that they build architecturally, arbitrarily changing the natural landscape in a kind of symbiosis.
Architecture becomes expression in concrete form and its use part of human evolution. She says, “Photography necessitates above all historical knowledge. In this process of learning, every phase naturally creates an interest towards other themes and it is a continuous opening towards other worlds. For this reason my work is characterized by constant study, by eternal research. Yet despite this, paying attention to the whisperings of that inner voice, that voice which tells me where to direct the camera lens at a precise moment is an essential, fundamental element of what I create.”
